Our Core Values

The Ten Key Values that guide the Syracuse Greens and the Green movement worldwide.

The Syracuse Greens are guided by the Ten Key Values of the Green movement. These principles form the foundation of everything we do, from the policies we advocate to the candidates we support. They represent our vision for a more just, sustainable, and democratic society.

1. Grassroots Democracy

We believe that every citizen should have direct and meaningful participation in the decisions that affect their lives. Politics should not be the exclusive domain of professional politicians and wealthy donors. We work to decentralize power and bring decision-making closer to the people it affects.

2. Social Justice & Equal Opportunity

All people deserve equal access to education, healthcare, housing, and economic opportunity. We oppose all forms of discrimination and work to dismantle the systems of oppression that perpetuate inequality. A just society provides for its most vulnerable members.

3. Ecological Wisdom

Human societies must operate in harmony with the natural world, not in opposition to it. We recognize that we are part of nature, not separate from it. Our ecological wisdom informs policies that protect biodiversity, combat climate change, and ensure clean air and water for all.

4. Nonviolence

We advocate for peaceful means of conflict resolution at all levels, from interpersonal relationships to international affairs. Violence breeds more violence, while dialogue and understanding build lasting peace. We oppose war as a tool of foreign policy and support demilitarization.

5. Decentralization

Power should be distributed as widely as possible, with decisions made at the most local level feasible. Centralized power is prone to abuse and disconnected from the needs of ordinary people. We support strong local governments and community self-determination.

6. Community-Based Economics

Economic activity should serve community needs and well-being, not just generate profits for distant shareholders. We support worker-owned cooperatives, local businesses, and economic development that keeps wealth circulating within communities.

7. Feminism & Gender Equity

We value the cultural and biological diversity of all people and support equal rights for all genders. The historical domination of society by patriarchal systems has caused immense harm, and we work to create true equality in all spheres of life.

8. Respect for Diversity

We honor cultural, ethnic, racial, sexual, religious, and spiritual diversity. A healthy society celebrates differences rather than suppressing them. We stand against bigotry in all its forms and work to build an inclusive community.

9. Personal & Global Responsibility

We are each responsible for our individual choices and their impact on others. At the same time, we recognize our interconnection with people around the world. Our actions have global consequences, and we must consider them in our decisions.

10. Future Focus & Sustainability

We seek to create conditions where future generations can thrive, not merely survive. Sustainability means meeting our current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. We think in terms of decades and centuries, not just election cycles.
