Democracy is more than just voting every few years. True democracy means citizens having real power to shape the decisions that affect their lives. The Syracuse Greens believe in participatory democracy where government is transparent, accountable, and responsive to the people.

Ranked-Choice Voting

Our current winner-take-all electoral system limits voter choice and perpetuates a two-party duopoly. Ranked-choice voting allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference, ensuring that the winner has broad support and that no vote is wasted.

Several states and cities have already adopted ranked-choice voting with positive results. According to election reform organizations, RCV increases voter turnout, reduces negative campaigning, and produces more representative outcomes. New York should join this growing movement for fairer elections.

Campaign Finance Reform

Big money corrupts our political system. When wealthy donors and corporations can spend unlimited amounts on elections, ordinary citizens are left without a voice. We support public financing of campaigns, strict limits on contributions, and full transparency in political spending.

The Green Party does not accept corporate donations. Our candidates are accountable to voters, not special interests. We believe all political parties should follow this example to restore trust in our democracy.

Voter Access

Every eligible citizen should be able to vote easily and conveniently. We support automatic voter registration, expanded early voting, and making Election Day a holiday. Voter ID laws and other restrictions that disproportionately affect marginalized communities must be opposed.

New York should implement same-day voter registration and no-excuse absentee voting to maximize participation. The right to vote is fundamental to democracy and should never be infringed.

Proportional Representation

Our single-member district system leaves millions of voters effectively unrepresented. Proportional representation would ensure that legislative bodies reflect the full diversity of political opinion in the electorate.

Many democracies around the world use proportional representation successfully. This system encourages cooperation, reduces polarization, and gives voice to minority viewpoints that are currently shut out of our political process.

Participatory Governance

Citizens should be involved in governance beyond just voting. We support participatory budgeting, where community members directly decide how to allocate public funds. We advocate for citizen assemblies, public hearings, and other mechanisms that bring people into the decision-making process.

Transparency is essential to accountability. Government meetings should be open, records should be accessible, and officials should be responsive to constituent concerns.
